PEIRCE AND THE TRIVIALIZA nON OF THE SELF - CORRECTIVE THESIS

چکیده
The aims of this chapter are two-fold: first and primarily, to identify and to summarize the development of an important but hitherto unnoticed tradition in 19th-<:entury methodological thought, and secondly, to suggest that certain aspects of the history of this tradition give us a new perspective from which to assess certain strains in contemporary philosophy of science. In Part I below, I attempt to defme this tradition, to document its existence, and to note some features of its evolution. In Part II, I briefly indicate the manner in which this history may shed new light on some recent trends in inductive logic.

c○University of Notre Dame BOOK REVIEW Geraldine Brady. From Peirce to Skolem: A Neglected Chapter in
The thesis of this book is that Löwenheim’s and Skolem’s work on what is now known as the downward Löwenheim–Skolem theorem developed directly from Schröder’s Algebra der Logik, which was itself an avowed elaboration of the work of the American logician Charles S. Peirce and his student O. H. Mitchell. We have been unable to detect any direct influence of Frege, Russell, or Hilbert on the devel...
متن کاملFive Answers on Pragmatism
Prof. Haack answers a series of questions on pragmatism, beginning with the origins of this tradition in the work of Peirce and James, its evolution in the work of Dewey and Mead, and its influence beyond the United States in, for example, the Italian pragmatists and the radical British pragmatist F. C. S. Schiller. Classical pragmatism, she observes, is a rich and varied tradition from which t...
متن کاملRepresentations as Full Peirce Algebras
Extended Abstract In this Note I prove a representation theorem for Peirce algebras introduced in Brink, Britz and Schmidt (1994b, 1994a). I show that the class of full Peirce algebras is characterised by the class of complete and atomic Peirce algebras in which the set of relational atoms is restricted by two conditions. One requires simplicity. The other requires that each relational element ...
متن کاملGilles Deleuze: Beyond Peirce’s Semiotics
This paper studies the role of the semiotic discussions of Charles Sanders Peirce, the American philosopher and mathematician, in the formation of Deleuze’s first leading book on cinema, Cinema 1: the Movement-Image,in whichthe author surpasses Peirce’s semiotics. We will show how Deleuze creates a new form of signs in his second leading book on cinema, Cinema 2: the Time-Image. Deleuze had tri...
متن کاملWarping Peirce Quincuncial Panoramas
The Peirce quincuncial projection is a mapping of the surface of a sphere to the interior of a square. It is a conformal mapping except for four points on the equator. These points of non-conformality cause significant artifacts in photographic applications. In this paper, we propose an algorithm and userinterface to mitigate these artifacts. Moreover, in order to facilitate an interactive user...
